Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are the principal founders of the Village Voice Media, which is the publisher of The Phoenix New Times.
In the past months, The Phoenix New Times have continuously published news and stories that cover the events and happenings in the locality, especially in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office.
The heads of Phoenix New Times, Lacey and Larkin, has been verbally battling with Joe Arpaio due to the latter’s unlawful dissemination of authority, repression of media rights, and other notorious acts which is unbecoming of an elected law officer.
Joe Arpaio’s incorrigible acts included transferring of 3,000 prisoners to new penal facilities in their underwear, constructing the tent city, had inmates eat rotten bologna, forcing male prisoners to wear pink underwear, and many more. While the construction of the tent city may be amusing to some, the truth is, when prisoners are forced to stay there they are at the mercy of the elements, especially the scorching heat of the desert sun.
And because of his extreme enforcement of authority many inmates from the Maricopa County Jail died from ailments that could have been avoided or readily treated at the hospital.
His most recent illegal activity is the harassment and profiling of immigrants especially Latinos where he and his men do a round-up of Hispanic residential areas and arrest anyone they suspect is an undocumented alien.
Many times over, Joe Arpaio has been advised that arresting and detaining immigrants based on mere suspicion is against the constitutional law. But because he wants to emphasize his hardcore image he chose not to heed the advice and continued in persecuting immigrants.
The unlawful arrest and detention of Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey happened due to an article about an inquiry that was being conducted by a grand jury that was published in the Phoenix New Times.
The arrest came at night, and the Maricopa County Selective Enforcement Unit hauled Lacey and Larkin off to jail under the orders of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Fortunately, the complaint against Lacey and Larkin did not stick and they were released afterwards closing the said case. But the two media men fought back and filed a case against the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. After some time the case was closed and the Maricopa County paid a cash settlement of $3.75 million to Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey.
To make up for the corrupt and immoral things that Joe Arpaio did which affected the lives and careers of many individuals in Phoenix, Arizona, Lacey and Larkin used their cash settlement fund of $3.75 million to establish Frontera Fund – a non-profit organization that aims to help in upholding the rights of immigrants and migrants in the State of Arizona.
Larkin and Lacey likewise started the Front Page Confidential, a website that hosts different news and articles majority of which are about the First Amendment.
The First Amendment is a law which states that people and groups (media included) within the United States have the freedom of speech where they can state their ideas and opinions without anybody inhibiting them to be able to do so.
