Deirdre Baggot: Dedication and Innovation in Healthcare

Deirdre Baggot believes in excelling at whatever she undertakes, as evidenced by her extraordinary educational background. She completed a Doctor of Philosophy Degree at the University of Colorado and a Business Administration Master’s Degree at Loyola University School of Business in Chicago. To add clinical expertise to administrative, she completed her Nursing Bachelor of Science Degree.

One of her most significant contributions to the medical profession is advocating for and promoting bundled payments as a more efficient billing method than fee-for-service payments. In a June 18, 2018 blog post on her website, Deirdre explains why she is passionate about the subject of bundled payments.

Bundled payments make it less stressful for patients, especially those with chronic illnesses. As a nurse, Deirdre Baggot, Ph.D., MBA, BSN, has witnessed how distressed patients become with the constant flow of medical bills in the mailbox. With multiple bills arriving monthly, low-income or uninsured patients may not be able to cope. View Deirdre Baggot’s profile at Linkedin

Bundled payments make life easier for doctors, nurses and administrative staff. Deirdre’s blog post explains that there are currently 60,000 unique diagnoses in the medical profession, over 6,000 prescription and over-the-counter drugs and over 4,000 operative procedures and techniques used routinely. Add the many different payers (insurance companies, etc.) a medical office works with every day and the bundling method is a win/win situation.

Another innovative idea that Deirdre Baggot developed was a ‘checklist’ for patients in her care. She explained in an interview that when she had a very sick patient, she tended to do too many lab tests and diagnostics. She started making lists of symptoms and finding out what medical literature recommended. She tried to match lists to patients to avoid ordering excessive tests. This approach has evolved today to what is called ‘care protocol’, which spares patients of unnecessary tests and treatments.

Along with Deirdre Baggot’s focused, dedicated service to healthcare, she loves to take time to ‘make memories’ with her family and spend time with friends.

In response to the interview question, “What is your favorite quote?”, Deirdre answered, “Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency “– Maya Angelou. We have the ‘what’ of her life defined above. Now we know the ‘why’.
