The information that children learn in schools is not just random tidbits or facts that will help them get through one singular experience some day. The information that they are learning is foundational. The time that they spend in school will help build on the knowledge that they will gain one day as an adult. Many adults struggled to remember much of the singular information that they have learned throughout their time in the public school system but they do understand major concepts. Betsy DeVos, current and acting Secretary of Education, believes that children aren’t even receiving the big picture information that they once got nowadays. She believes that the only way to rectify the current decline in education is to change the way that the act of education is done.
For those who are not familiar with Betsy DeVos before she became Secretary of Education she was a major campaigner for the notion of “school choice”. School choice is a concept of where parents should be allowed to enroll their students into the educational institution of their choice rather than be forced to adhere to the arbitrary boundaries of county lines that placed their children into subpar institutions. Children are being placed in public-school systems that are chronically underperforming or short-staffed all over the nation. The problem with this is that sometimes there is a close public-school that is not suffering from the same debilitation. The other options available to these parents are those of charter schools, homeschooling, and private schools. Without the strong culture around public-schools, parents would feel more empowered to seek out the alternative measures of such institutions.
Betsy DeVos spoke with PhilanthropyRoundtable about her goals for the future of education. Before she had even been elected to the position of Secretary of Education she had strong goals for “school choice”. She believed that this could be a national phenomenon. Her goal was to push students into these programs and help them turn into the academic scholars they were always meant to be. The problem that some parents seem to have with such programs is the cost. They fear that they will not be able to afford a public or charter school. Betsy DeVos wants Paris to understand that this could not be further from the truth. There are many charter schools that operate in the same manner as a public-school when it comes to any type of tuition. She also wants and understands that there are always scholarships available and other forms of financial assistance. In addition to her work raising awareness for “school choice”, she has also helped found funding scholarships for students that want to enroll in these types of programs. Her work is fundamental to alternative education. This is one of the reasons why she was such a good choice to be selected for the office of Secretary of Education. Her interest in education is varied and she does not show loyalty to one specific brand of education. She is always made it clear that her only loyalty is to the students that she is charged with.
